| Building
Winning Teams
DAY ONE: Morning
DEFINING
A TEAM
The course starts by asking the trainees to define a team individually.
From their feedback, a consensus is formed and becomes a working
base from which to work for the course.
KNOWING YOUR TEAM
Based on a survey developed by R. M. Belbin (Cambridge) is used
to show how individuals fall into most-used and least-used categories
of team roles. Knowing this information is helpful not only in
building awareness of individual strengths and weaknesses on a
team, but also helps a leader to assign tasks based on individual
traits.
Afternoon:
TEAM BLOCKAGES
A team survey is conducted to analyze how individuals in a group
can see situations quite differently. Once identified, these differences
can lead to group disharmony. The survey shows participants how
they can maximize differences by acknowledging that they exist
and developing strategies for
resolution.
DELEGATING
EFFECTIVELY
As the previous exercise highlighted potential stumbling blocks
to smooth communication, ideas for enhancing delegation style
are introduced. Through group discussion, options are elicited
and ranked according to effectiveness.
DAY TWO:
LEADERSHIP RESPONSIBILITIES
Day Two starts with a discussion focusing on how managers can
maximize their leadership skills. A series of slides are used
to give participants options for defining leadership and leadership
responsibilities and integrating
them into their management style.
SETTING TEAM OBJECTIVES
A group activity is conducted to identify and create team objectives.
Slides are used to discuss steps for setting subordinate objectives
and improving and evaluating subordinate skills.
Afternoon:
GROUP DECISION-MAKING
Designed to enhance group decision-making process, trainees are
asked to discuss several scenarios in which efficiency is needed
to reach an effective conclusion. Feedback is given on one’s
ability to integrate the previously
discussed skills as well as on personal style.
IMPROVING INTERNAL COMMUNICATION
The last segment is designed to improve communication skills through
a series of exercises. Ideas for being sensitively direct, handling
conflict, and delegating with dignity are introduced. Each trainee
is then asked to make
an action plan for subsequent integration.
